AML Approved Music: ‘Sorry for the Delay’ by Just a Band @justaband (Audio)

Just a Band Sorry for the DelayInnovative. This was the first word that came to my mind when I heard the album, Sorry For The Delay by Just a Band. These guys are not your average, run of the mill African artists and what a blessing that is. For those longing for something different in the African music scene, your wish is granted with Just a Band. These guys are so great that I had a very difficult time deciding which song to feature. In the end, I decided on featuring Probably For Lovers because the group released it as a free download on Soundcloud. Also, I loved how I could still hear African undertones in this song despite the innovative nature of it. Some artists today wholly abandon traditional African sounds in their music today, which I think is a shame; thankfully, that is not the case for Just a Band.

After hearing Sorry For The Delay, I believe a major crossover is on their horizon. Why? Because they are unique! They are not constrained by music that is classified as popular today. They are “Africa’s Super-Nerdy Electropop/Art Collective” who dabbles with electronica, jazz, hip-hop, and African rhythms. I could even see them collaborating with the likes of M.I.A. or Santigold one day. They are on that level.

Background on Just A Band:
Just A Band is a trio made up of Billy “Blink” Selanga, Dan Muli, and Jim Chuchu, and they’ve been exciting crowds all over Nairobi, Kenya. The group was formed when the men were studying at Kenyatta University. They went on to release the song “Iwinyo Piny” accompanied by a self-made animated music video. Initially the song received little airplay due to its unconventional musical style, but with time they started to gain popularity through underground channels. Their debut album Scratch To Reveal was relatively successful. Their track “Huff + Puff” was featured in the 2012 film, “House At The End Of The Street.”
