It’s no secret that Justin Timberlake (JT) has been busy dabbling in several ventures over the past couple of years, including: acting in several films, a clothing line (William Rast), a tequila line (901), and a number of endorsement deals. Many fans were glad to see JT play the Renaissance man role; however, they wanted music! I remember being pleasantly surprised by JT’s debut solo album titled Justified (released in 2002), and in complete awe of his sophomore album, Future Sex/Love Sounds (released in 2006). JT left everyone wanting more and we waited patiently for JT to pursue his interests in the hopes that he would return to us in the way we first knew him. I’m just glad that the time has finally come, and early at that!
As I write this post, I am on my third listen of JT’s highly anticipated album after almost seven long years: The 20/20 Experience. Technically, the album is scheduled for release on March 19, 2013, but JT gave his fans a treat yesterday:
Fans flocked to the nearest computers and hopped on iTunes to listen to the JT we have grown to love, singing over the amazing beats of Timbaland; these two make magic together. A colleague of mine messaged me about the album and she had already given it rave reviews so I rushed to give it a listen; this free stream was the highlight of my day. As an aside, I think that streaming-on-demand is definitely a way for artists to share their music with their fans while protecting their rights- we’re all allowed to listen, but not copy the music. I think that this has been a big reason that interactive webcasters like Spotify and Rhapsody have become so popular. It’s great to hear quality music for free from an artist that you enjoy which affirms the reasons that you love them so much in the first place, and prompts you to support their efforts and purchase their music; at least in my case. I will definitely be buying my copy of this album next week. I know that many artists have engaged in free streaming for fans, and I hope that other artists consider following suit.
And, may I just say that JT’s team has done an incredible job with marketing?! Music artists, please take note. Regardless of whether you’re not as popular as JT, there is still a lesson to be learned about how to promote your brand and market yourself. From his vibrant Target commercials that aired during the 2013 Grammy’s (immediately following his performance), his announcement and promotion of his upcoming tour with Jay-Z (Legends of the Summer), his appearance on SNL this past Saturday, and his appearance on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” EVERY SINGLE NIGHT this week on NBC.
Not to mention, their use of social networking sites and of course, the free stream of The 20/20 Experience on iTunes that this post is centered on. I’m interested to see the results of this marketing when the album comes out next week.
Now, without further ado, I have posted the track listing and link to The 20/20 Experience below. Note, some say that this free stream will be available on iTunes until the release of the album on March 19th. However, I have not found confirmation of this just yet, so if you would like to hear some quality music for free, I’d click the link and check it out ASAP. By the end, you too may want to wish Mr. Timberlake a warm, “Welcome Back!”
