King Sunny Ade: Hard Rock Cafe inductee auctions off guitar for 52Million Naira

On November 30th, 2016, King Sunny Ade (KSA), music icon and veteran Juju music maestro, became the first Nigerian to join the Hard Rock Cafe Lagos Music Memorabilia Collection. The ceremony was held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Oniru. During the ceremony KSA, as he is fondly referred to, donated a vintage Fender Guitar, shoes and album cover.

“With the induction, King Sunny Ade will now rank among other Hard Rock world greats whose music paraphernalia dots the walls of the franchise business across the world,” explained Temple Management Company’s Head of Entertainment, Mark Redguard in a press statement.

This past Sunday, December 11, 2016, the music icon followed up with a concert tagged ‘Sunny On Sunday’ held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, where he celebrated his 70th birthday and also auctioned the Fender Guitar for 52million Naira.

“Talking about my guitar which will be auctioned on the night to make the grand finale of my show, that piece is a part of the art,” said KSA on the evening of the event. “For the guitar to go into the art is a very good place for it to be. It is a symbol of art for me. I didn’t make it but it was for me and having possessed it, it should be an art piece that will remain for live. My guitar is my baby”.

The guitar was painted by award-winning artist Victor Ehikhamenor who also excitedly spoke to the press about the opportunity to be a part of history, “When you are given the opportunity to add a line to the history of a legend, you’d better ask God to take your hand and guide your senses. I’ve loved King Sunny Ade’s music for the longest time and his rhythm is one of the best companion in my studio when working”.

KSA first encountered music at the age of 12 in 1958 at Osogbo, Osun State. He has risen to global recognition with two Grammy-Award nominations, three Hollywood movie features, and hundreds of recordings, which includes international collaborations.
