If your husband physically abuses and/or cheats on you, as an African woman, would you file for a divorce? This was the essential question posed by Battabox to average Nigerian women out and about their day.
I thought there would be a difference in the responses by young Nigerian women and older ones. I was surprised to see there was no real difference. I reckon Nigerian-American and British-Nigerian women would respond differently, given the realities I see and know about. Although I have found that many African women who migrate from Africa, regardless of age, who have the mentality displayed by many in the video below, stay through the abuse.
Further, as to the Battbox video, I am highly disturbed with the bible quotes and references that were used to support domestic violence and staying in an abusive relationship. I don’t know how anyone can justify abuse through biblical scriptures when both the plain/literal and contextual meanings, fail to condone such domestic violence.
I find people just say “the bible says” and use that as a basis for justifying the craziest things even when the bible makes no mention of these weird interpretations. By the way, Christian “haters,” for lack of a better word, I won’t publish comments that take a swipe at Christians. I don’t accept that on my turf. Indeed, I find that atheists and other non-christian faiths, just like some Christians, have a tendency to latch on to whatever their beliefs are, based on their personal backgrounds, issues etc., and then proceed to want to beat everyone else over the head with a hammer to buy into their self righteous; and many times inflated and egotistical beliefs. I don’t really see a difference. One group believes God does not exist and proceeds to try to force everyone to believe the same in a fanatical and dogmatic fashion (usually they are left unchallenged and to hide behind their false sense of logic); and the other just says “the bible says this” and the “bible says that,” usually only when it is convenient, to justify horrific actions such as domestic violence.
May God help us all.
Poor host, she sobered up.
