AML 067: Rape, Power & the Law: #Sugabelly v. Mustapha Audu, Time for New Rape Laws in Nigeria?

Over the weekend, Sugabelly, a controversial Nigerian blogger, became the name on everyone’s lips when she took to twitter and her blog to share highly damaging information about Mustapha Audu, the son of a powerful and recently deceased political figure.

Sugabelly claimed Audu raped her eight years ago when she was 17 years old. She also claimed he invited his friends, brother and cousins to gang rape her too, and that these crimes took place over a six month period. While she has shared the story and impact on her life since 2007, Nigerians did not take notice until this weekend when Audu’s father died and Sugabelly joyfully took to twitter to rejoice and wish even more deaths on the family, including on Audu and the men who allegedly also gang raped her. Sugabelly’s revelations about Audu raping her have since gone viral with the media, political and social activists and Nigerian society at large, all weighing in on what is the first of its kind true open dialogue about rape. In addition, Audu has responded denying all allegations and revealing, through his wife, documentation that seem to tell a different side of the story.

In the 67th episode of The Africa Music Law Show, Ms. Uduak (host), along with the help of one of her legal colleagues, addresses the court of public opinion, how a case like this could play out in a court of law, and reviews rape laws in Nigeria.
