Media personality Toke Makinwa dated her on and off boyfriend for twelve (12) years. Late last year, they broke off and they took their business to twitter causing an incredible viral discussion about their breakup. Makinwa subsequently granted an interview to a media house where she was diplomatic about the breakup and essentially asked for the media and public to respect her privacy. Last month, however, she surprised all with a public blog post about her “surprise” wedding to the same man she just broke up with.
She volunteered the following information in relevant part:
“We would have loved to have all our loved ones there with us, but this was our registry and so much had happened between Maje and I in the last 3 months. Plus, It was such a big surprise, I had no clue. I hate surprises but I must say, this one knocked me out of my elements because I usually suspect something is happening. Hehehehe! I am not fully over it yet!”
On February 3rd, 2014, Ebony Life TV aired its talk show anchored by Dolapo Oni. One of the guests was Makinwa’s designer Kunbi Oyelese of April by Kunbi. When asked about the dress, she had this to say:
“I worked under pressure to get it done…Toke called me up and said, “I’m getting married.” And when I asked when, she said “in 3 days” . . .and I am like seriously. . . so I had to work towards a short deadline . . . but it was all good.”
Since the airing of this show, the internet has been buzzing and many questioning her credibility and even accusing her of lying.
AML TALENT TIP
It’s usually a good idea, talents, to cross check your stories with that of persons within your team and make sure it all checks out. You shouldn’t walk on eggshells but also be clear when you speak, what you mean, especially if you will write a blog post about this.
In this instance, unless I am missing something, I don’t see any inconsistency in her statement.
She can still be clueless and surprised, as she says she was, about her wedding because she had only three days to plan a wedding!
